In the Ten Commandments we are commanded to honour our father and our mother. It is the first command with a promise – that your days may be long in the land I am giving you (Deuteronomy 5:16).

The Commandment strengthens further the important and crucial relationship of parents and children within the covenant of God’s love...

It may be because we always think that new things are better, that even the sound of the name ‘Old Testament’ turns us off from reading it. Poor us! The death and resurrection of Jesus brings home to us the reality of both judgement and eternal life. Judgement without Christ’s death on our behalf leads to an eternal separation from God and the torment of hell. The fear of hell should always lead us to the grace and forgiveness of God in Jesus and motivate us to purity. It’s almost passé these days to point out the great paradox of the modern age; that although we huddle together in our sprawling cities in greater numbers than ever before, we live in an epidemic of loneliness. One of the reasons for this is that although we have more and larger houses, we have less people in them. According to the last census, more than a quarter of the houses you passed on the way to church have only one person residing in them. Another reason is that we work such long hours and are so consumed in the business of day to day life that we have little time to slow down and spend the time that’s needed to develop deep and good friendships.

The death and resurrection of Jesus was the beginning of the end! We now think of the future as having an end point. Jesus death was a ‘once for all’ sacrifice that made forgiveness possible for people of all time and place (Romans 6:10). Jesus having been raised will never die again (Romans 6:9). This same Jesus who died for us and was raised will one day return...
